IDW at NYCC: Blumhouse Horror Comics, New James Bond
IDW is going dark and super cool with a slate of new horror comics, James Bond series, and a new Last Ronin series.
The publisher announced a partnership with Blumhouse, the studio behind innovative horror films like Obsession and Five Nights at Freddy’s. The books will be presented under their IDW Dark imprint and will begin in late 2027.
It starts with The Purge comic written by Dan Watters (Batman: Dark Patterns) and illustrated by Juan José Ryp (Wolverine: Blood Hunt). The book will explore the one night a year that all crime – including murder – is legal in the dystopian version of the US.

Writer Tim Seeley (Hack/Slash) is taking a stab at the horror-comedy Happy Death Day. The film follows a woman who relives the day of her own murder over and over again while trying to discover her own killer. IDW did not confirm if the comic will follow the same character or create a new one.
M3gan is a sci-fi horror franchise about an advanced A.I. doll who takes her programming to the extreme. She goes on a bloody rampage while thinking that she’s doing what she should to protect her owner.
“Quality storytelling experiences are always our top priority at IDW, so partnering with Blumhouse to expand our horror imprint was truly a no-brainer decision,” IDW CEO Davidi Jonas said. “Working with Blumhouse to continue exploring the compelling potential of their modern classics within the pages of the comics is a tremendous honor and the creative conversations have been exciting. I can’t wait for fans to feast their eyes on these stories.”

IDW announced that they acquired the license to publish James Bond comics and that Grant Morrison (Batman) is writing the first book. It is officially titled Sunbreaker and will be a six-part adventure.
“I’m Morrison. Grant Morrison,” the writer said in a video announcement. “We’re bringing Bond into the contemporary world of desert war, rogue AI, fake news, billionaire bad guys, and their assault on democracy, with new vehicles, new gadgets, and a terrifying new ultimate villain. James Bond faces the challenge of a lifetime and the collapse of a world order he swore to defend. We hope you’ll join us, shaken or stirred,” Morrison said.
IDW also announced that Stan Sakai is writing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The First Ronin miniseries. The book features art by Soo Lee, with new characters designs and mythology created by Sakai.
Set in 1600s Japan, General Kameyama is losing a war when four yōkai that look like anthropomorphic turtles arrive to help. The five-issue series starts in March 2027.
“I have been a huge fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) since 1984, when both the Turtles and Usagi made their debut. I enjoyed all of their incarnations, including The Last Ronin, so I am really excited to be writing The First Ronin. It will have new variations of the Turtles, not mutants this time but yōkai,” Sakai said.
