Dynamite Entertainment has announced an updated schedule for their Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly comics. Initially, all three series were supposed to start by now, but Dynamite postponed the books “due to multiple factors from the creative and publishing sides” according to their press release.

Now, they have confirmed that Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel books by Kelly Thompson will begin in March 2027. Also, the Firefly comic starts a month later.

Buffy #1 by Thompson and Stephen Byrne arrives on March 10. The Angel companion series by Thompson and artist Giulia Giacomino follows the same month. The two books are interconnected, telling one story across both titles.

“Writer Kelly Thompson’s story for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel has evolved and become more ambitious, so it was deemed best to take a step back and up the page count to meet the story and deliver the best possible product for fans. Buffy #1 and Angel #1 will have significant story page increases from average issues – at no additional cost to readers or retailers,” per Dynamite’s press release.

Buffy #1 features 35 story pages and Angel #1 has 32 story pages; both will be released as 48-page comics priced at $4.99. Dynamite shared several of the covers for both series, including an Angel #1 that is partly censored because it reveals the new villain, Leviathan. Editor Nate Crosby is also putting together even more variant covers, including connecting covers.

“The first thing I ever tried to seriously write when I was first trying, was a Buffy the Vampire Slayer spec script. So, to say this is a dream realized… at least from a certain angle, is deeply true,” Thompson said. “It’s critical that readers read both Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1 and Angel #1, as those two books together sort of ‘set the table’ for this new situation our characters find themselves in and launch how they’re going to be dealing with it. It’s going to be a much more complete and rewarding reading experience to read the books together for at least the first arc. And part of the reason for doing that is because comics are so much more flexible.”

Firefly is also setting out on new adventures with Mal, Zoe, Wash, and the rest of Serenity’s crew. The book is written by Mark Russell (Red Sonja) with art by Lorenzo Re (The Terminator), and begins in April 2027.

“I think Firefly was what first exposed to me what a hollow concept genre can be,” Russell said. “What you really want to do is to create a cast of characters that, as different as they may be, as much as they may not like each other, only to realize how much they need each other to survive. Which is true of all of us. And, just like the show, life is sometimes a western, sometimes a rom-com, sometimes darkly funny, and other times scary as hell. That’s what you want to capture.”
