Artist Joshua Cassara, who was known for his work on X-Men, died from heart complications on Tuesday, September 22, 2026. His wife, Martha Cassara, announced his passing on Instagram. Cassara was 46 years old.

Cassara was best known as the artist on the main X-Men series and for illustrating X-Force during the Krakoa period. Marvel chose him as one of their Stormbreakers, i.e. one of the most promising new artists, in 2020.

He attended La Mirada High School in La Mirada, California, where he worked on the school newspaper, and graduated in 1998. Cassara was a self-taught artist whose early work was at Titan Comics on The Troop, Mycroft Holmes and the Apocalypse Handbook, and Doctor Who comics in 2015-2016.

Cassara joined Marvel in 2016 for New Avengers #7, followed by a run on Falcon when Rodney Barnes was writing the book. He drew issues of Secret Empire, the Sentry miniseries, Venom, and contributed to Marvel Comics #1000.

His run on X-Force began in 2019, and he produced solo issues of Black Panther and Captain Marvel. Cassara drew issues of Moon Knight and provided covers for Planet of the Apes and X-Force.

Next, Cassara joined X-Men, working on the title through 2024. He drew issues of X Lives of Wolverine, Fantastic Four, and The Avengers. Cassara produced interiors for Marvel 85th Anniversary Special and contributed to the Deadpool/Wolverine series.
