Chip ‘n’ Dale in Comics: Small Characters, Big Adventures
Chip ‘n’ Dale are adorable anthropomorphic chipmunks that started out as little rascals and became heroic detectives. They have starred in Disney cartoons, their own animated series, and they have appeared in many comic book series.
Bill Justice created the chipmunk duo, and they were introduced in the 1943 short film, Private Pluto. During their debut, they fought with Pluto about storing their nuts inside a military base cannon. They returned a few years later in Donald Duck shorts, and were soon given more distinctive personalities and defining looks.
Chip became more focused, logical, and a safer schemer; while Dale was impulsive, laidback, and bit dimwitted. Chip was given a small black nose, centered teeth, and smoothed hair; Dale got a larger dark red nose, a gap between his teeth, and ruffled hair. They appeared in nearly two dozen Disney shorts from the 1940s to the early 1950s.
Chip ‘n’ Dale returned in 1989 to star in the animated series, Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers. The chipmunks formed a detective agency with the mouse inventor Gadget Hackwrench, the adventurer mouse Monterey Jack, and Zipper the fly. Their looks were further differentiated by their signature outfits. Chip wears a leather jacket and fedora (like Indiana Jones) and Dale sports a Hawaiian shirt (like Magnum, P.I.).
The pair made their comics debut in Walt Disney’s Comics & Stories #25 (October 1942), and would go on to appear in over 200 issues of the book. Chip ‘n’ Dale starred in several issues of Dell’s Four Color comics, Gold Key’s Mickey Mouse book, and Dell’s Donald Duck. Dell published the first Chip ‘n’ Dale comic, which began in December 1955 and ran for 27 issues through June 1962.
The chipmunks made guest appearances in Dell Giant in the late ‘50s into the early ‘60s. Their second Chip ‘n’ Dale series was published by Gold Key, running for 83 issues from December 1967 through March 1984. Chip ‘n’ Dale Rescue Rangers based on the TV series began in June 1990 and ran for 19 issues through December 1991.
They joined Darkwing Duck for a few issues of Disney Afternoon, then BOOM! Studios published an eight-issue Chip ‘n’ Dale Rescue Rangers series in 2010-2011. Most recently, the chipmunk heroes joined many other Disney characters for the Disney Afternoon Giant series from IDW.
