First Look at Circus of Bones: The Art of Mike Mignola

Mike Mignola’s art will be exhibited at the Philippe Labaune Gallery in New York City during the fall of 2026. The companion catalog Circus of Bones: The Art of Mike Mignola will be at the exhibit and in comic book shops. Act 4 Publishing, Skybound, and Image Comics have provided a first look at the hardcover book.

Circus of Bones is filled with 144 pages featuring 53 new watercolor paintings that Mignola created exclusively for the gallery event. There are several new ink illustrations, 29 new pencil drawings, and 19 published covers. It contains 42 published comic pages, including two complete stories. Each image was scanned from the original art.

Mignola is a comic book artist whose work is easily recognizable. He draws minimalistic lines and deep shadows, and employing gothic elements for horror, supernatural, and fantasy tales. Mignola is well known for creating Hellboy and the shared universe that includes the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.), and characters like Abe Sapien.

He has been working in comics since the early 1980s and has provided notable work in Dark Horse titles like Baltimore and The Amazing Screw-On Head. Mignola drew covers for the Batman “Death in the Family” story arc and illustrated the Gotham by Gaslight one-shot. Mignola also worked in film as an illustrator on the Bram Stocker’s Dracula movie. He made character designs for Batman: The Animated Series and worked closely on the Hellboy movies.

They have produced Jason Pearson’s Body Bags Artist’s Edition, DC Silver Age Covers and Stories Artist’s Edition, and Beta Ray Bill by Daniel Warren Johnson Artist’s Edition.
