Comic Values on the Move: Adventure Into Fear #20
The secondary comic market regularly ebbs and flows as book sales go through moderate changes, and occasionally see big jumps (or falls) in value. Overstreet Access tracks these changes through diligent research into the market and via assessment of The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide marketing reports. Those changes are routinely updated on OverstreetAccess.com’s Recent Value Changes page, which can be viewed with a membership to the website.
Overstreet Access and The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide tracks the value of comics as they go… and also as they go down. The prices are usually going up when it comes to comic keys like first appearances, important storylines, or when a book is retitled. But that isn’t always the case. Sometimes a book gets hot for a period, and then the price goes back down. Overstreet Pricing Editor Yolanda Ramirez found this to be the case when she did a valuation update on Adventure Into Fear #20 (February 1974). The book in Near Mint-/9.2 condition is now valued at $100, marking a 50% decrease in value.
That issue of Adventure Into Fear was the first one starring Morbius the Living Vampire. Micheal Morbius was originally a biochemist who tried to cure his rare blood disease using radical methods. He combined experimental chemicals and vampire bat genetic material with electroshock therapy. The extreme choice of treatment turned him into a living vampire with traits and abilities that are similar to vampires. To keep his disease in check he must feed on human blood, which put him in the villain category. However, he has also been an antihero who fights evil.
Morbius was created by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane and introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man #101 (October 1971). He took over as the lead character of Adventure Into Fear with issue 20. In the early 2020s, the book was valued at around $100 in Near Mint-/9.2. Then in the Guide #52 it took a big jump to $250 – which was also the year that the Morbius movie was released. The book started to decline after that to the current level of $100 for a 9.2 copy.
