Jimmy Olsen will investigate the facts behind a high profile murder case in The People v. Gorilla Grodd. The mockumentary style TV show will star Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, who reprises the role he first played in 2025’s Superman. DC Studios originally announced a Jimmy Olsen TV series in November 2025, and are now moving forward with an eight-episode presentation on HBO Max.

“A superintelligent ape is convicted of murdering his father, the king of Gorilla City. In an eight-part ‘true’ crime docuseries, the Daily Planet’s Jimmy Olsen reopens the case, investigating whether Gorilla Grodd was wrongly convicted in one of Metropolis’ most famous murder trials,” according to the show description.

Jimmy Tatro (Home Economics) will play Gorilla Grodd. Gisondo is joined by fellow Superman stars Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard. The cast is rounded out by Mary Holland (Happiest Season), Eduardo Franco (Stranger Things), Arian Moayed (Wonder Man), Andrew Leeds (Barry), and Tim Baltz (The Righteous Gemstones).

Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault are serving as showrunners, writers, and executive producers on the series. The pair are familiar with the mockumentary style, having created American Vandals, a mockumentary about the true crime genre, and Players, which spoofed the eSports world. Yacenda will also direct all eight episodes, and Perrault will be part of the onscreen cast.

“We’re excited by the challenge of creating a series that feels less like an entry into the DCU and more like an artifact from it. A Daily Planet original documentary made for the people of Metropolis. We hope it’ll appeal to fans of the comics, comedy, and true crime. And while we can’t speak for audiences here yet, we already know it’s a huge hit in Metropolis. They love this series,” Perrault and Yacenda said.

The show is produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television with James Gunn and Peter Safran as executive producers.
