Robert DuBois, aka Bloodsport is a world class marksman who knows how to use the most advanced weapons and equipment to hit his target. He is also a great fighter, strategist, and field commander who was created by John Byrne, and debuted in Superman #4 (April 1987).

DuBois was introduced as a Vietnam war draft dodger who fled to Canada to avoid serving because he was afraid to die. His younger brother, Michael, reported in Robert’s place and he was sent to Vietnam to fight. Michael lost both of his arms and legs during the war and Robert had a mental breakdown over the guilt he felt.

Lex Luthor contacted DuBois because he wanted to create a pawn to kill Superman. Luthor’s operatives played on DuBois’ fixation over Vietnam, redirecting his emotions into a desire to assassinate Superman. They gave DuBois advanced weapons that included a Kryptonite gun and a teleportation device to instantly bring different weapons to him. He renamed himself Bloodsport and went to Metropolis.

Now claiming that he had fought in Vietnam alongside his brother, Bloodsport raged at the citizens of the city. He accused them of not appreciating the freedom he and Michael fought for and randomly killed dozens of people. Bloodsport shot Superman with a Kryptonite bullet that weakened the Man of Steel. Once the bullet was removed, Superman targeted the teleportation device that Lex Luthor gave Bloodsport.

In response, Bloodsport threatened to blow up the teleporter’s power pack and destroy ten square miles in Metropolis. Jimmy Olsen discovered Bloodsport’s identity and had Michael rushed to the scene so that he could stop his brother from the murderous rampage. It worked and Bloodsport gave himself up and he was sent to jail.

While he was in prison, DuBois found a nemesis in Alexander Trent, a fellow prisoner and white supremacist who started calling himself Bloodsport. Racial tensions were also high at Stryker’s Island, so the prison warden sought ways to diffuse the situation. His solution was to have DuBois and Trent face each other in a boxing match that would keep the violence inside the ring. A riot broke out and DuBois got one of Trent’s weapons, then he blew a hole in the prison wall, but he was shot and presumably killed during his escape attempt.

Bloodsport was reintroduced during the Infinite Frontier relaunch as an expert marksman who had been trained by his father to use anything as a weapon. In this continuity, Mickey had enlisted in the military and was killed in action, but like the original history, DuBois’ mental state suffered and he became Bloodsport. He was sent to Belle Reve after a failed attempt to kill Superman, then Amanda Waller forced him to join Task Force X, aka the Suicide Squad.
