Ulysses Klaw is a very smart, very evil Marvel villain who often tangles with Black Panther, the Fantastic Four, and the Avengers. He is a physicist who unlocks the ability to turn into solid sound and uses a sonic device to blast people with high volume sonic waves or create blasts of concussive force. Klaw was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, who introduced him 60 years ago in Fantastic Four #53 (August 1966).

Klaw (originally spelled Klaue) is the son of Colonel Fritz Klaue, a Nazi who worked for Baron Strucker and was sent to Wakanda to try to learn their secrets. Klaw grew up to become a physicist who designed a sound transducer with the goal of turning sound waves into something physical. To do this, he stole vibranium and killed T’Chaka, Wakanda’s ruler and Black Panther. T’Challa, the king’s teenage son and future Black Panther, attacked Klaw and the fight ended with Klaw escaping but losing his right hand in the process.

Klaw returned years later with a sonic gun in place of his missing right hand that can create physical objects made out of sound, and he created a device to turn himself into sound. He fought Black Panther and the Fantastic Four, ending up in jail after the defeat, but was freed by Ultron. Klaw and Solarr trapped the Avengers in a solid sound barrier and threatened to kill them if T’Challa didn’t name Klaw as the new ruler of Wakanda. Black Panther realized that Klaw was disguised as one of the prisoners and he defeated both Klaw and Solarr. Then he tried to open a dimensional portal for the Sheenareans using vibranium from the Savage Land, but Ka-Zar stopped them.

Klaw tangled with Dazzler and she dissolved his humanoid form and sent his sound energy matter into space. It was collected by Galactus then Doctor Doom found it during Secret Wars and restored him to his previous state. The separation that he endured drove him insane, so Doom tried to use the fractured villain to steal power from Galactus and Beyonder. In response, the Beyonder possessed Klaw and tricked Doom into relinquishing the godhood that he stole. Once they were sent back to Earth, Klaw’s mind slowly healed.

Klaw joined the Wizard’s new incarnation of the Frightful Four and attacked the Fantastic Four when they were doing a procedure to help the Human Torch when his powers were out of control. Klaw threw the Thing into the medical pod the heroes had set up for Johnny resulting in the Thing being turned back into his human form. Aron captured both teams and Klaw was sent to jail once again.

When Captain America’s shield was broken and improperly repaired, it had an effect on the vibranium deposits in the earth causing them to explode. Klaw went to Wakanda hoping to absorb the sound energy from the impending explosion to give himself more power. Instead, Captain America used his damaged shield when Klaw attacked and the blast that occurred fixed the shield and stopped the volatile vibranium explosions.
