Comic and cartoon artist Dan Spiegle’s art has appeared in a large variety of comics, such as Crossfire, Scooby-Doo, Hopalong Cassidy, and Blackhawk. He drew for Dell Comics, DC, and Marvel, creating art based on several movie and TV characters.

Spiegle was born on December 12, 1920, in Cosmopolis, Washington, and after finishing high school he joined the Navy where he worked on newspapers and insignias for airplanes. He became a professional cartoonist in 1949 drawing the Hopalong Cassidy comic strip for Mirror Enterprises Syndicate. He penciled and inked advertisements for Wheaties in Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories #144 (September 1952).

His first story was the 16-page “The Bushwacker” in Annie Oakley and Tagg #7 (April 1956). He went on to draw many other Western stories for Dell, including Rex Allen, Four Color, and Queen of the West, Dale Evans. He went on to the Gold Key Comics Imprint, providing art for Space Family Robinson, The Green Hornet, Korak, Son of Tarzan, and Brothers of the Spear.

In addition to his ability to draw live-action TV characters, Spiegle drew Gold Key’s animation title Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?. Later he worked for DC on Batman, Jonah Hex, and Teen Titans Spotlight. He penciled and inked every issue of Crossfire and worked on all five issues of Hollywood Superstars.

Spiegle drew for Indiana Jones and the Spear of Destiny, the comic strip for Terry and the Pirates, worked with the Bank Street College of Education on the “Bank Street Classic Tales,” Bible stories for the American Bible Society, and worked on the new Crossfire story in 2008, “Too Rich to be Guilty.” Spiegle died on January 28, 2017 when he was 96 years old.
