The Paradoxical Life of Shatterstar
Shatterstar is a hero that leads a complicated existence. He is from the future and another world, shared a body with another person, and played a part in his own birth. As a superhero, he has been a member of X-Force and New Mutants, along with other teams, with a longstanding goal to free his home world.
His abilities include super-strength and intelligence, teleportation, controlling electric frequencies, and generating bioelectric shockwaves. Created by Fabian Nicieza and Rob Liefeld, Shatterstar debuted in The New Mutants Annual #6 (August 1990). Shatterstar was introduced as an artificial human from a century in the future, who was genetically engineered to be a gladiator on Mojoworld. Once he escaped, Shatterstar joined a rebel group called Cadre Alliance that wanted to put an end to Mojo’s dictatorship.

Shatterstar was sent back in time and to Earth to ask the X-Men for their help to overthrew Mojo. Instead of finding the X-Men, he came across Cable and X-Force. At first, Shatterstar fought Cable and Domino, until they started talking and Cable said that they could help him stop Mojo. Since they could use time travel to do so, they were in no hurry and Shatterstar became a founding member of X-Force. He has had an on-again, off-again relationship with his teammate Rictor, and the pair shared the first same-sex kiss in a mainstream Marvel comic.
He started having memories of a human named Benjamin Russell. While Shatterstar was dealing with this, Mojo captured him and Cable, then turned them into digital images to be used on a TV show. Shatterstar was badly wounded, but Spiral saved him and Cable by teleporting them back to reality. Spiral then took the group, including Longshot, to an institute for the criminally insane where a mutant named Benjamin Russell was in a coma since he gained powers. Longshot transferred Shatterstar’s soul into Benjamin’s body and he was revived felt completely whole for the first time in his life.

Shatterstar’s time traveling life would soon get more complicated. Dazzler was pregnant with Longshot’s child and he suggested naming the baby Shatterstar. They traveled to Mojoworld to free the planet and Dazzler was soon seen without a baby bump and without a child. It was believed that she had miscarried, but then in a later comic, it was revealed that she had Shatterstar. He wiped his parents’ memories and arranged for himself to be taken to the future to ensure that his life would play out as it was supposed to. In another story twist, it was also later revealed that Shatterstar’s DNA was used to create Longshot.
