Spider-Woman Enters a Dark Period in 50th Anniversary Special
Marvel is honoring Jessica Drew’s milestone 50th year in comics with the Spider-Woman 50th Anniversary Special #1. The one-shot will celebrate her history as a hero and lay the foundation for what the publisher described as her “darkest era.”
The story begins with a twist in Amazing Spider-Man: Spider-Versity that leads into the special. Writer Dan Watters (Loki) and artist Andrea Broccardo (Spider-Man Noir) will take Jessica back to being a private investigator. She and journalist Ben Urich will enter the dark corners of the Marvel universe, which could impact both her legacy and her sanity.
“Mysterious and dangerous, Jessica Drew has always been one of my very favorite Marvel heroes. I’m so pleased to be bringing Spider-Woman venom-blasting into a new chapter of her story!” Watters said.
Then Ann Nocenti (Daredevil) returns to writing the character, joined by Stefano Raffaele (Alien vs. Captain America). In their tale, she investigates a case in Los Angeles that brings her into contact with her age-old foe, the Flying Tiger.

“Everyone has flaws, and it’s heroic to overcome them. When Editor Kaeden McGahey asked me to spin a tale for Spider-Woman’s 50th anniversary, I thought of how Jessica Drew’s spider pheromone scent can be isolating,” Nocenti said. “It’s a great test of her detective skills to sleuth out clues despite her creepy vibe and also hits a universal chord – we all have occasional ‘everyone hates me’ moments in life.”
“In the 1980s editor Mark Gruenwald gave me the assignment to ‘retire’ Spider-Woman, ending the book’s run with issue 50, so returning to write a story about how Jess’s friendships and battles are hard won feels redemptive,” Nocenti added. “Added bonus – with art by the spectacular Stefano Raffaele, the story will be gorgeous!”
Spider-Woman 50th Anniversary Special #1 has a main cover by Olivier Coipel with variant covers by Greg Land and Rose Besch. The one-shot arrives in comic shops on September 2, 2026.
