Captain Marvel: Dark Past #3
Marvel; $4.99
Carol Danver's Seventh Sense is back and she's experiencing fractured memories of an investigation into DNVR, a covert military group. She asked Rogue and Emma Frost to help bring clarity to those memories, which led to the discovery that DNVR is a hate group that is selling stolen Kree technology. And it's run by one of Carol's relatives. Meanwhile, the Wrecking Crew received an upgrade from the mysterious Desecrator and they are determined to attack Carol again.
Captain Marvel and Spider-Woman are taking the next step into their investigation when the Wrecking Crew shows up for round two. This time the fight isn't as easily handled as their recent encounter. Carol comes face to face with Desecrator and she learns that the masked villain has a connection to her family.
For this book, writer Paul Jenkins is balancing the past with the present action. He's showing some of the pain from Carol's past, but he's not beating the reader over the head with it. Her history pushes the story forward by showing Carol's determination, intelligence, and bravery. It is also well-paced, as Jenkins isn't dragging things out or zipping through important details.
This issue has loads of dialogue and exposition, that is matched by good action scenes from artists Lucas Werneck and Eder Messias and colorist Rod Fernandes. They bring energy to the fight scenes with the Wrecking Crew, emotion to the confrontation between Captain Marvel and Desecrator, and paint a clear picture of past events.
