Event Horizon: Inferno #2
IDW Dark; $4.99
The first Event Horizon comic based on the movie covered the terrible things that occurred to the original crew before the failed retrieval attempt by the crew of the Lewis and Clark. The new series is set 200 years later when the ship that's been to Hell and back has resurfaced once again.
The new story starts with Daniel Durante, the embodiment of greed and privilege, and Skylar Mooney the daughter of a Durante family staff member. In the first issue, Daniel and his brother attempted to sacrifice Skylar to a demon for their own gain. It appeared to be unsuccessful, but a demonic spirit attached itself to Daniel and has been guiding him ever since he was a teenager. That included marrying a desperate Skylar and putting her in a mental health institution when she disagreed with him.
Now, he is funding an expedition to the Event Horizon with the intention of waking up the dark energies by using Skylar's trauma… because he forced her on board. The first issue ended with the shocking revelation that Lewis and Clark crew member Lieutenant Starck has survived in stasis for the last 200 years. She's terrified, feral, and the only one who knows just how dangerous the Event Horizon is and how desperate their situation has become.
Writer Christian Ward is killing it in Event Horizon: Inferno. He's building on the concept that the evils surrounding the gateway can attach themselves to hosts and guide them there for sustenance. For this series, Ward is not only showing the horrors of the ship, but is also exploring the darkness that can reside in a person. Since day one, Daniel has been groomed to believe he is superior to others, and that presents itself in really awful ways. Not only is Ward writing a horror story about a haunted ship but one that illustrates the dangers of too much wealth and privilege.
Artist Rob Carey and colorist Xenon Honchar give equal detail and energy to both story threads. They reveal what has happened between Skylar and Daniel through emotionally driven closeups, and then show the current situation on the ship with wider shots and grotesque monsters. It's equally scary and interesting.
