Comic Values on the Move: Invincible #1 & #19
The secondary comic market regularly ebbs and flows as book sales go through moderate changes, and occasionally see big jumps (or falls) in value. Overstreet Access tracks these changes through diligent research into the market and via assessment of The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide marketing reports. Those changes are routinely updated on OverstreetAccess.com’s Recent Value Changes page, which can be viewed with a membership to the website.
The Invincible series, a coming of age superhero story with a major twist early in the run, has been a popular title since it debuted in 2003. Overstreet Pricing Editor Yolanda Ramirez has noted significant jumps in value for two specific issues.
Invincible was created by writer Robert Kirkman, a relative newbie to comics who had written the Battle Pope superhero parody and the Tech Jacket miniseries for Image. The first issue of Invincible debuted in January 2003, featuring art by Cory Walker, who had worked with Kirkman on a SuperPatriot miniseries. Colorist Bill Crabtree gave Invincible a deceptively bright color palette that appeared cheery until the very bloody graphic violence began.

Kirkman employed the same character-driven style and changes to traditional genre motifs in Invincible that he also used in The Walking Dead. The book follows Mark Grayson, a half-human, half-alien teenage boy that manifests superpowers when he is 17 years old. His father is Omni-Man, Earth’s most powerful hero – except that he’s actually a villain who was sent to Earth to conquer it. Mark refuses to join his father, putting the two at odds and leading to many nasty fights. Mark also joins other superpowered teens like Atom Eve and Rex Splode of the Teen Team and Coalition of Planets agent Allen the Alien.
Based on her study of the market, Ramirez has done a new valuation update on Invincible #1, noting that a Near Mint copy is now valued at $1,800. This marks a 63% increase from The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide’s previous Near Mint value of $1,100. Several early issues have risen in price, like issue 4 and issue 5 that saw a 450% increase to $110.
Invincible #19 (November 2004) with the introduction of Battle Beast has seen major growth in value. Battle Beast is an alien warrior who resembles a very muscular anthropomorphic white lion. The intergalactic traveler is feared by empires throughout the universe and became a fan favorite character in Invincible comics. Ramirez has updated the Near Mint value to $500, which sees a 2,400% increase from the previous listing.
