Buffy the Vampire Slayer Returns to Comics This Summer
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is ready to stake, slash, and thwart all the evil in Sunnydale once again. Dynamite originally announced the series at the 2025 San Diego Comic-Con, and now they are revealing more details about the book. It will be written by Kelly Thompson (Absolute Wonder Woman) with art by Stephen Byrne (Justice League/Power Rangers). The new comic debuts in July 2026.
The comic is based on the television show of the same name that debuted in 1997 and ran for seven seasons. It will follow Buffy Summers, the chosen one tasked with ridding the world of vampires, demons, and the forces of darkness. Buffy is joined on her quest by her Watcher, best friends (two of whom are powerful witches), and two lovestruck vampires.
The oversized first issue opens an event story that brings together the casts of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the spinoff, Angel. They will gather in Sunnydale to face a new villain determined to destroy the world – all while personal crises unfold among Buffy and her friends.
“The series includes the comics debut of a beloved Buffy character, and a massive twist that will shake the faithful fandom to the core,” per Dynamite’s press release. It also stated that in addition to writing the Buffy comic, Thompson will also write an Angel companion title.

“Buffy Summers is, in my opinion, one of the best modern heroes of science fiction/fantasy,” Thompson said. “The show was wildly inspirational for a young Kelly, and like so many things that feel very lucky in my life, I’m not sure I’m a writer today without encountering Buffy at the right moment. This idea for Buffy has been sitting with me for a long time – and so when the chance to grab both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel came along, I couldn’t resist trying it. I hope you guys will enjoy the ride – it comes from a place of deep love for the franchise – and I’ll try my best to be worthy of it.”
“I’ve been a lifelong Buffyverse obsessive and I’ve got the VHS boxsets and DVDs to prove it. Working on this comic with such a phenomenal writer is a surreal dream come true, and I still can’t quite believe it. I can’t wait for fans to see what Kelly has planned,” Byrne said.
Title editor Nate Cosby has lined up cover artists David Nakayama, Amanda Conner, Joshua “Sway” Swaby, and Juliet Nneka to present their visions of the Slayer. Dynamite is also remastering the first Buffy comic cover from 1998 by Arthur Adams. The blind bag option features three premium variant covers that include logo-less editions, line art examples, and original art covers by Byrne, Declan Shalvey, J. Scott Campbell, and others.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1 arrives in comic shops on July 22.
