From its earliest days as a crowdfunded comic, Pop Kill has had tremendous appeal. The creative team, co-writer and cover artist Dave Johnson, co-writer Jimmy Palmiotti, and artist Juan Satacruz all have their well-earned credentials, and this is them at the tops of their respective forms.

In addition to that, in their hands the premise simply screams fun. Here’s their description: “Imagine a world where the two dominant and competing Cola companies, each worth billions, are owned by former conjoined twins who are now separated and have grown to hate each other so much they hire assassins, saboteurs, and espionage personnel to meddle with each other on a daily basis. This is the story about brotherly love run afoul, and the people they enlist to do their dirty work.”

Cola Wars, espionage, sex and violence, mystery, intense rivalry, and action all packed into what was originally page turner of a four-issue mini-series. If you’re inclined to Palmiotti’s usual blend of well-developed story and mayhem, it should be right up your alley.

After their crowdfunded success, the creative team moved the series to Mad Cave to find a wider audience in the Direct Market. They relaunched the mini-series there.

Now Mad Cave has released it as a 12.5” x 8.25” deluxe, 176-page hardcover, and it is a thing of beauty. Due in December, but just recently arrived, it’s practically a must for fans of the series. It’s also not a bad way for new readers to experience it for the first time, although there is a 144-page softcover edition as well.

In addition to a new cover by Johnson, the deluxe hardcover has a selection of pin-ups and variant covers from the series. There’s also a one-page image for Pop Kill: Big Candy, the next story, which they promise is coming in 2026 (I hope that means we’ll get more than the “Seasonal Flavors” themed reprints of the first issue. Lots of customer confusion at my local comic shop about them).

If you haven’t checked this out, but you enjoy the creators’ other work – particularly Palmiotti’s Painkiller Jane – this should definitely appeal to you. It’s quite the ride.
