Keenspot; $5.99

Detectives Macintosh and Skorzeny have finally had a break in the case of the missing boy, Billy Kinderman. And that break has led to a winding conversation with the Mad Hatter, filled with riddles and a sinister undertone. This is the first chapter in the “Unholy Ground” story arc and leaves readers with a genuinely surprising ending.

The Mad Hatter takes the spotlight as the creepy villain of the issue, and writer-artist Mark Spears plays it very well. In the dialogue heavy issue, the Hatter has unsettling asides, makes ominous comments, and stares with a look that is somewhere between menace and amusement. The skepticism on Mac and Joe’s faces is also nicely rendered with the former looking confused while the latter appears thoroughly annoyed.

Another good aspect about this issue is that it acknowledges the many characters and dangling story threads that have happened so far. Hopefully some of those will tie up soon or begin to weave together for a bigger picture.
