Comics dynamo Alex Ross is pulling double duty as writer and artist on the upcoming graphic novel, Marvel Dimensions. The Hollywood Reporter got the exclusive announcement for the book from Marvel and Abrams ComicArts.

It was revealed that the book will take place in the regular Marvel universe but also venture elsewhere. The book will start with the origins of Spider-Man, the Hulk, Iron Man, Wolverine, and others in painted spreads.

“But as the story moves forward, the tone begins to shift. The voice behind the narration is not who the readers expect and carries a motive that slowly pushes the narrative somewhere darker and far more unpredictable,” the Abrams ComicArts description reads.

“Once this change becomes clear, the book expands into something larger and more surprising. Storylines twist in on themselves, characters behave in unexpected ways, and events ripple across the Marvel Universe with growing tensions. Ross uses the structure of the book to create anticipation and pull the reader deeper into a mystery that keeps widening. Every new sequence reveals another layer, building toward a final act that reframes everything that came before it. A bonus 32-page comic book is included that is pivotal to the storyline,” the description continues.

Ross stated that he has been working on the book for a year and a half, brainstorming ways that he could tell the origins of Marvel characters. The book will introduce over 200 characters or variants of established characters, similar to what Ross did with writer Mark Waid in DC’s Kingdom Come in 1996.

Ross also shared that about half the book is rendered in his fine art painting style and the rest is done in pen and ink. Additionally, he created color guides so that the colorist can follow the vision he has in mind for the graphic novel.

“It’s meant to be as bonkers a ride for the reader as it could possibly be. You’re getting one kind of entertainment, and then it changes on you midstream and then you’re getting a different art style suddenly, and then you’re wondering, ‘Where’s this going?’ And then the format changes within the book itself, a mid-book format change. All these things hopefully seem to unify and combine and come back together, but it’s meant to be a wild ride that is throwing everything plus the kitchen sink at you,” Ross told The Hollywood Reporter.

Marvel Dimensions will retail for $29.99 and reach comic shops in September 2026.
