Booster Gold is a glory hound. A comical hot dog from the future who travels back in time and uses his knowledge of historical facts and advanced technology as a hero. A creation of Dan Jurgens, Booster debuted 40 years ago in Booster Gold #1 (February 1986) and was the first major character introduced to the DC universe after Crisis on Infinite Earths.

He joined DC as Michael Jon Carter, a poor kid living in Gotham in the 25th century. Using his athletic prowess, he secured a football scholarship to Gotham University and became the star quarterback. His father, who had left during Michael’s childhood to follow his gambling addiction, resurfaced at this point and convinced Michael to lose games on purpose so they could win bets. When Michael was exposed for cheating, he was expelled from the school and became a pariah in football.

He got a job as a night watchman at the Metropolis Space Museum where he became obsessed with studying the superheroes and villains from the 20th century. He acquired Skeets, the artificial intelligence security robot that can fly, speak, is capable of cognitive thought, and can shoot energy blasts, as well as having a plethora of historical records.

Determined to become a superhero, Booster stole items from the museum, including Brainiac 5’s forcefield belt and a Legion of Super-Heroes flight ring. The advanced technology from the materials he stole gives him the ability to fly, to shoot energy blasts, project force fields, and enhanced strength.

He used Rip Hunter’s Time Sphere to travel back to the 20th century, determined to be a superhero and successful in corporate America. A shameless self-promoter obsessed with fame and fortune he got under the skin of other more virtuous heroes.

Michael eventually earned his superhero moniker – though by accident. When he played football, he’d been nicknamed Booster, but had decided his superhero name would be Goldstar. Well, that was mangled when he saved the president and was introduced as Booster Gold.

Despite rubbing some heroes the wrong way, Booster Gold has been a key member of the Justice League and other teams, helping to save the day – while building his brand.
