$20 1905 ‘Technicolor’ Gold Certificate at Heritage

An extraordinary uncirculated 1905 $20 ‘Technicolor’ Gold Certificate, PMG 67, could sell for $150,000 in Heritage Auctions’ Florida United Numismatists Currency Signature Auction‘s Platinum Night January 7-12, 2015 in Orlando, Florida. Heritage’s FUN World Currency Signature Auction will be held concurrently, January 8-12, and the week’s-worth of rarities is estimated to bring a combined total of over $10 million.

“Collectors took notice of last year’s record setting results and a number of private collections are opening for the first time in decades,” said Dustin Johnston, Director of Currency Auctions at Heritage. “I can’t remember a time when our Platinum Night auction has featured such a fine collection straight from private collections.”

The exceptional Technicolor Gold Certificate comes from The Kiawah Collection, a fine assortment of high-end type notes and high denominations including a selection of $5,000 Federal Reserve Notes ranging from an original Dallas $5000 Federal Reserve Note (est. over $150,000) to a choice uncirculated $5,000 Note (est. over $120,000). A 1934 $10,000 Federal Reserve Note, PCGS 64, is formerly of the Binion Hoard, formerly on display at Binion’s Horseshoe Casino in Las Vegas (est. over $120,000).

Rarities fit for the specialist include a First National Bank of Cape May $10 1882 Brown Back, the first seen at auction in at least 40 years (est. over $50,000) and a newly discovered $100 1880 Reserve Note, which PCGS has graded 40PPQ, making it the finest known (est. over $50,000). The auction also holds a True Trophy Serial Number 1 Brown Back, PCGS 62 (est. $17,500). The $5 1882 note from Schuyler, Nebraska, is a rare find from one of the community’s two banks, which closed its doors in 1916.

The Alan Dorris Collection of Georgia Obsolete Currency includes more than 900 notes from the finest collection of its kind ever built, highlighted by a new 68PPQ $500 1857 Bank of Commerce Proof (est. over $12,500), a key rarity and likely the finest Proof to ever come to market. The collection also holds a rare Georgia Santa Claus Note (est. over $10,000), sporting a desirable vignette of the jolly bearded one and his trusty reindeer in the center of the green ink reverse.

A fine collection of United States Bonds, including many of the rarest issues seen, holds a $100 Spanish-American War Bond, which is one of just two known to exist (est. over $40,000). Handsomely framed with an open back, the extremely fine 1898 bond is coveted for its rarity and Heritage’s FUN Currency event marks the first opportunity that collectors have had to obtain either one at public sale.

A selection of rare small-size notes, known only as The Lithuanian Collection, holds more than 300 high-grade specimens which are the finest known to exist or the finest ever offered at public auction. A 1928F $5 Narrow Star Note, PCGS 67PPQ (est. over $10,000), and a 1928A $5 Reserve Note, PCGS 64PPQ, tied for the finest ever graded (est. over $8,000) are among the collection’s key rarities.
